Sister Diana of Iraq

From their very beginning in Iraq, the Order’s mission had been to serve Christian and all other Iraqis on equal terms. The Sisters provide religious education for girls, care for the sick and teach the faith to all in need, a vocation that they have followed for almost 150 years.

Sadly, on June 10th, 2014, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, invaded the Nineveh Plain in Northern Iraq and, starting with the city of Mosul, conquered one city and town after another, giving the Christians of the region three choices:  1) convert to Islam, 2) pay a tribute (Al-Jizya) to ISIS, or 3) leave with nothing more than the clothes on their back.

The Sisters, like thousands of others, were forced to flee, abandoning their convent in Mosul and seeking shelter in another city. Though Sister Diana and the Dominican Sisters of St.Catherine of Siena are without a home of their own, they continue to serve, ministering to the many thousands of refugees in Iraq, regardless of faith or ethnicity.
