Social Security Agreement between Canada and Sweden

As a general rule, people who are not U.S. citizens can only receive U.S. Social Security benefits outside the U.S. if they meet certain requirements. However, under the agreement, if you are a U.S. or Swedish citizen, refugee, stateless person, or a person who is eligible for parental or survivor benefits under one of these people`s social security record, you can receive benefits as long as you reside in Sweden. If you are not a U.S. or Swedish citizen and live in another country, you may not be able to receive benefits. The limitations of U.S. services are explained in Your Payments While You Are Outside The United States (Publication #05-10137). If you have Social Security credits in the United States and Sweden, you may be eligible for benefits from one or both countries.

If you meet all the basic system requirements of a country, you will receive regularly from that country. If you do not meet the basic requirements, the agreement can help you qualify for a benefit as described below. If you do not agree with the decision regarding your eligibility for benefits under the agreement, contact a U.S. or Swedish Social Security office. People there can tell you what you need to do to appeal the decision. Note As shown in the table, a U.S. employee employed in Sweden can only be covered by U.S. Social Security if they work for a U.S. employer. A U.S. employer includes a corporation incorporated under the laws of the United States or a state, a partnership if at least two-thirds of the partners are located in the United States, a person who resides in the United States, or a trustee if all trustees are located in the United States. The term also includes a foreign subsidiary of a U.S.

Citizens and residents employed by the subsidiary. The Social Security Agreement between Canada and Sweden entered into force on January 1, 1986. ** Regulation EU 883/2004 on the application of social security schemes applies between EU Member States and Switzerland. If you do not wish to be eligible for benefits but would like more information about the agreement, write to: Although the agreement between the United States and Sweden allows the Social Security Administration to count your Swedish ATP credits to help you qualify for retirement, disability or survivor benefits in the United States, the agreement does not cover Medicare benefits. As a result, we cannot count your credits in Sweden to benefit from free Medicare hospital insurance.

To apply for U.S. or Swedish benefits under the Agreement, follow the instructions in the “Entitlements to Benefits” section. If you are the widow, widower, or child of someone who has contributed to the retirement programs of both countries, this agreement can help them qualify for the following: If you work as an employee in the United States, you are generally insured in the United States and you and your employer pay Social Security taxes only in the United States. If you work as an employee in Sweden, you are usually insured in Sweden and your employer only pays social security taxes in Sweden. Sweden has a new pension system that covers people born in 1938 or later. People born in 1937 or earlier continue to receive their benefits only under the old system. Persons born between 1938 and 1953 receive part of their benefits under the old system and part of them under the new system. Persons born in 1954 or later will only receive their benefits under the new system. The Canadian government`s international social security agreements cover only retirement benefits and the Canada Pension Plan. If you are contributing or have contributed to the QPP but not to the CPP, please consult the Quebec Pension Plan. This document covers the highlights of the agreement and explains how it can help you while you work and when you apply for benefits. .
